Kings Canyon Community Raises Over $20,000
Tuesday, 8 February 2005
Residents and staff of Kings Canyon in Australia's Red Centre have raised over $20,000 for victims of the tsunami waves that struck Asia on Boxing Day 2004. A special charity day and auction was held at Kings Canyon Resort on Australia Day, with management company Voyages matching all proceeds dollar-for-dollar.
According to General Manager Sacha A'Bell, Australian cricket legend Steve Waugh, together with 35 local businesses, lent their support and were instrumental in helping raise the $20,157.90.
"We were fortunate to have Steve Waugh visit nearby Ayers Rock Resort with the Governor General a few days before our event," he said. "Steve generously signed a host of cricket memorabilia which attracted fierce bidding."
CARE Australia will receive the funds, as part of an exclusive partnership with Voyages properties in the Northern Territory, Tasmania and Queensland.
Voyages will be encouraging their guests to help CARE re-build communities and livelihoods throughout Asia and has made an initial commitment to match all contributions, dollar for dollar up to $50,000.
