Uluru's Beloved Field of Light Celebrates Landmark Anniversary

11 February 2026

Australia's iconic Field of Light at Uluru turns 10 in April 2026, with Ayers Rock Resort unveiling a series of celebrations for the much-loved immersive artwork created by renowned international artist, Bruce Munro.

Since opening in 2016 – when the ambitious installation was intended to be temporary – some 750,000 people have experienced Field of Light. Following a major refurbishment overseen by Bruce Munro’s team in late 2024, the installation is shining brighter than ever - cementing its position as one of Australia’s most beloved art experiences.

Inspired by desert wildflowers bursting to life after rain, the artwork features 50,000 solar powered stems illuminating an area the size of seven football fields. It sits gently on Anangu Country, a place that’s held story, spirit and light for tens of thousands of years.

The success of Field of Light sparked a global movement, with Bruce Munro later creating similar installations at Sensorio in California, Longwood Gardens near Philadelphia, Freedom Plaza in Manhattan, an installation in Albany, Western Australia to commemorate the Anzacs, and one in Salcombe, Devon, in the UK. The Uluṟu installation remains the original and longest-running, continuing to inspire visitors from around the world.

A Series of Celebrations in 2026

Ayers Rock Resort will host a series of special events and enhancements throughout the year to celebrate this milestone:

  • Public Art Installation – To be unveiled 26 March on Wurundjeri Country (Corner Swan and Carroll St, Richmond, Melbourne), a breathtaking mural brings “Field of Light” to the city through the vision of two remarkable artists; Valerie Brumby (Anangu artist of Walkatjara Art), who has created a bespoke artwork depicting the Field of Light through her own eyes, and Alex Kerr (Wurundjeri muralist), who will reimagine it with Valerie by his side for the people of Melbourne. The mural will remain on display until 18 April 2026. Valerie’s original painting will then be exhibited permanently at the Gallery of Central Australia (GoCA) located at Ayers Rock Resort, Uluru.
  • VIP Evenings with Bruce Munro – On select dates in March, guests can book the Field of Light Dinner or Star Pass and experience an exclusive personal introduction to the installation by Bruce Munro. The evenings offer a rare chance to meet Bruce and hear him talk about his inspiration and connection to the landscape.
  • Complimentary Guest Q&A Sessions – Also in March, Bruce will host free Q&A sessions at Arkani Theatre, Ayers Rock Resort. Guests can learn more about the creative process behind Field of Light and ask questions in an informal setting.
  • New Menus for Field of Light evening events – From 1 April, Field of Light Dinner and Star Pass experiences feature new menus that hero native and Indigenous ingredients, developed using the finest produce from First Nations-owned Creative Native and Cooee Native Ingredients Australia.

Matt Cameron Smith, CEO, Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia (operator of Ayers Rock Resort), says: "It was meant to open for one year; it’s been ten. Field of Light is now one of the most loved and photographed experiences in Australia. We’re incredibly proud to see it reach a decade, shining brighter than ever. This anniversary is a chance to celebrate the artwork, the landscape and the cultural stories that make this place so special."

Light artist Bruce Munro continues: "Field of Light began as a personal response to the beauty and energy of the desert at Uluṟu. I never imagined it would grow into a global series of installations. Uluṟu is where the idea came to life and it will always be the spiritual home of the artwork. Creating it was a dream come true and it's a personal joy to see that it still shines bright in the landscape that inspired it."

Anangu artist, Valerie Brumby says: “Doing this artwork, painting the sunset over the Field of Light makes me feel happy and proud. This is good for the tourists to see, and we are making a mural to show everyone how beautiful it is.”

The anniversary year also highlights Ayers Rock Resort’s growing collection of immersive light and sound experiences. These include Wintjiri Wiru, a cultural drone and light show created in partnership with Anangu that shares a chapter of an ancient creation story, and Sunrise Journeys, a female-led laser and light experience co-created by three Anangu women artists.
