NITA Celebrates Major Milestones and Award Recognition

9 July 2025

The National Indigenous Training Academy (NITA), operated by Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia at its two sites – Ayers Rock Resort near Uluru in the Northern Territory and Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre in Far North Queensland – is proud to announce a series of remarkable achievements that highlight its commitment to empowering Indigenous Australians through vocational education and training.

Since its inception in 2011, NITA has supported over 750 young Indigenous students through to graduation, including over 650 graduates from the Ayers Rock Resort campus alone – a testament to the Academy's expanding reach and impact across the Northern Territory and the country.

In further recognition of its excellence, NITA has recently been named a finalist in the 2025 Northern Territory Training Awards (Small Training Provider of the Year), underscoring its role as a leading Registered Training Organisation in the Northern Territory and in Indigenous education and workforce development. Winners at the NT Training Awards can go on to represent the Northern Territory at the prestigious Australian Training Awards, offering national recognition and further opportunities for growth and impact.

Adding to the celebrations, a standout graduate from NITA and now working with NITA as a qualified Education Support and Training Co-ordinator, Kit Hawes, was recently honoured as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at the GTNT Group Awards 2025.

“These milestones reflect the dedication of our students, trainers, and community partners. NITA is not just a training academy – it’s a launchpad for Indigenous success,” said Matt Cameron-Smith, CEO of Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia.

“At Voyages, we believe in creating pathways that empower Indigenous Australians to thrive in the tourism industry and beyond. NITA plays a vital role in this mission—providing not only skills and qualifications, but also confidence, pride, and a sense of purpose. Seeing our graduates succeed and lead in their communities is the most rewarding outcome of all. We’re incredibly proud of Kit and all our graduates who are shaping the future of their communities,” he concluded.

“Being part of NITA has changed my life. I’ve gained skills, confidence, and a clear path forward. I hope more young Indigenous Australians take this opportunity—it’s worth it,” said Kit Hawes.

NITA delivers market-leading, nationally recognised Certificate III traineeships in Hospitality and Tourism, designed to equip students with practical skills and industry experience, while providing an important pathway to employment for young Indigenous Australians.

Trainees live, learn, and earn onsite at Ayers Rock Resort and Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, supported by a dedicated team committed to their success.
