1 August 2025
Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia unveiled Sunrise Journeys one year ago (1 August 2024); a groundbreaking, culturally immersive light and sound experience that has since captivated over 10,000 visitors to Ayers Rock Resort. Today, it stands as the resort's highest-rated tour, earning consistent five-star reviews across platforms like Google and TripAdvisor.
Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Uluru, Sunrise Journeys transforms the desert floor into a living canvas, animating the powerful artwork Ngura Nganampa Wiru Mulapa ("Our Country is Truly Beautiful"). This bespoke piece was created by three celebrated Anangu artists – Selina Kulitja (Maruku Arts), Denise Brady (Kaltukatjara Art), and Valerie Brumby (Walkatjara Art); alongside a moving original score by Anangu musician Jeremy Whisky.
Together, the three artists offer a uniquely female perspective on connection to Country, drawing on generations of knowledge about the desert's harsh yet beautiful landscape, its flora, fauna, and spiritual significance. Their work reflects the deep expertise of Anangu women in reading, living with, and caring for the land.
The artwork, which is not for sale, remains a centrepiece at the Gallery of Central Australia (GoCA), drawing visitors eager to connect with Anangu culture through visual storytelling.
Matt Cameron-Smith, CEO of Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia, shared: "Sunrise Journeys elevates our commitment to authentic, meaningful, and responsible cultural tourism. It's a privilege to work with the region's leading artists and share their connection to Country with the world."
A Cultural and Technological Triumph
Developed in collaboration with global visual experience leaders, Mandylights, Sunrise Journeys uses cutting-edge projection, laser, and audio technology to animate over 170 digital elements of the original painting. The experience culminates in nature’s own spectacle - the golden glow of a sunrise at Uluru – accompanied by a seasonal breakfast featuring native ingredients like Quandong Chia Pudding and Smoked Kangaroo Croissants.
National Momentum for Indigenous Tourism
The success of Sunrise Journeys reflects a broader national trend: according to new data from the Tourism and Transport Forum, 61% of Australians are eager to engage with First Nations tourism experiences. This growing interest underscores the importance of cultural storytelling in shaping the future of travel.
CEO of the Tourism & Transport Forum, Margy Osmond said: “The appetite for meaningful, authentic First Nations tourism experiences just continues to grow and grow, and it’s incredibly encouraging to see more people seeking out opportunities to connect with the world’s oldest living culture. To meet this demand and ensure cultural integrity is respected, it is crucial to prioritise the continued support of Indigenous tourism operators. Experiences like Sunrise Journeys are powerful examples of what’s possible. They don’t just showcase the beauty of Country, they invite visitors into the stories, traditions, and deep cultural knowledge that have shaped this land for tens of thousands of years.”
