ULURU RANKS 3RD IN THE WORLD FOR BLUE SKY
Monday, 7 August 2006
The UK's leading online travel company Expedia has ranked Uluru 3rd in the world for its blue sky, following a ground breaking scientific study spanning 64,000 miles and 20 destinations.
According to Expedia, thousands of travellers cast their votes online (http://www.let-yourself-go.co.uk) to determine which destinations made the final 20. Anya Hohnbaum, a 20 year old TV researcher from Glasgow, Scotland, was chosen from 2,000 hopefuls to conduct the research and report her findings.
Over the last six months Anya (and Expedia) worked with scientists from the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to determine the best blue sky in the world, with Uluru taking out 3rd place.
It is the first research project of its kind, with NPL scientific tests carried out across six continents, 20 countries and 20 destinations to determine how bright the sky was in different locations and how many clouds were in it.
The tests were performed using a spectrometer to measure the light scattered from each sky, from which NPL could then determine the exact sky colour, brightness and cloud density at each location.
A number of carefully controlled steps were followed to ensure the colourmetric and radiometric based quantities measured were robust and compliant with international standards.
Anya also interviewed 100 people at each location to get their point of view of how each blue sky destination made them feel and to determine the general ambience. Her results showed that Australia, along with a few other countries, is where travellers are most likely to get their holiday high.
